Phenotype and Yield of Nuts from Low-Yield Walnut Trees After Grafting with‘Lipin 2’

Abstract:【Objective】Currently,walnut cultivationarea in China is extensive,buta large numberof seedling tres and low-yieldcultivars severelyconstrain industryprofitabilty.‘Lipin2’,afresh-eating walnutcultivar popular among consumers,commands higher market prices and beter sales thanordinary mixed nuts.Top-grafting forcultivarimprovement is akey technique in walnut cultivation,enabling theconversionoflow-yieldcultivars intomarket-preferredones,thereby increasing yieldand income.【Methods】To explore the nut phenotype and yield after top-grafting low-yield walnut trees with‘Gift 2’, this experiment used‘Lipin 2’as scions and 10- year-old seedling walnut trees as rootstocks for top-grafting. The yield and fruit quality of the grafted walnuts were measured and analyzed. 【Results】 After grafting with‘Lipin 2∙ in the first year,the walnuttres beganbearing fruitinthesecondyear,withyieldmultiplyingsignificantlyfrom years3to5.Theaverage single nutweight,longitudinal,transverse,andlateraldiameters,kerelweight,ndkerneloutpercentagealsoincreasedaually. Yielddecreased inthe sixth yearduetolow spring temperatures.【Conclusion】Top-graftingforcultivarimprovementis an important means toenhance the yield,quality,andeconomic benefitsoflow-yieldwalnut tres.Itisakeytechnologyforpromo tingqualityandeficiencyinthewalnut industry,holdingsignificantpracticalvaueforachievingruralrevitalizationandagricultural modernization.
