Can Cross-Functional Experience of CEOs Boost Organizational Resilience? Evidence from A-Share Listed Companies

Abstract:Enhancing organizational resilience is crucial for enterprises to cope with environmental uncertainty.This study empirically examines the relationship between CEOs’multifunctional experience and organizational resilience using data from China's A-share listed companies between 2Ol2 and 2022. The results indicate that CEOs with multifunctional experience significantly enhance corporate survival resilience compared to those with single-function backgrounds.This effect is more pronounced in firms with a single major shareholder,higher CEO compensation,and non-state-owned enterprises.Mechanism analysis reveals that the breadth of CEO functional experience strengthens resilience by reducing financing constraints and promoting corporate diversification.The research advances the understanding of antecedents to organizational resilience,providing valuable insights for cultivating versatile talents and fostering high-quality development in enterprises.
