The Effectiveness of Orff Music Play-based Intervention on Attention among Hearing-impaired Children

Abstract:Children with hearing impairment exhibita heightened susceptibility to comorbid Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD)or varying degrees of attentional difficulties.To investigate the interventional effcacy of Orff-based music playin enhancing attntional capacities among children with hearing impairment,the researcher conducted a single-case study involving a mainstreamed child with hearing impairment from a primary school in Beijing.An Orf-based music play intervention program was designed and implemented,comprising 60- minute sessions administered once weekly over a 16-week period.Attentional performance was assessed pre- and post-intervention using the Cancellation Test and the Digit Span subtest from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children II(WISC-II),evaluating atentional ffciencyand attentional span,respectively.Post-intervention assessment revealed marked improvements in the participant'sscores on both measures.Results from the Cancelltion Test indicatedan increase inthe effciency index from 10.16 to13.82,accompanied byareduction in completiontime from9 minutes 33 seconds to7 minutes 6 seconds.Performance on the Digit Span subtest improved significantly,with the score rising from 2 points to14 points.Behavioral observation further indicated thatthe participant'ssustained atention to instructional materials(e.g.,courseware)during classincreased from (204号 ⩽2 minutes to >5 minutes post-intervention. This empirical study demonstrates that the application of Orff-based music playyields a favorable interventional effect on improving atentional functioning inchildren with hearing impairment.
