Abstract:Toacuratelydeterminethetarget voidageof asphalt mixtures,this studycomparedtheroad performanceandwater permeabilityofasphalt mixtures of variousgradesunder diferent design voidage conditionsatboth highandlow temperatures, theanticipated trends inmicro-voiddiameters forasphalt mixturesof diferentgradeswere investigated.Subsequently,a correlation was established between theexpectedvaluesof micro-voiddiametersandthe macroscopicpropertiesof asphalt mixtures.Theresultsindicatethatasvoidage increases,rutingresistanceathigh temperatures initiallydecreasesbefore increasing,whilecrackingresistanceatlow temperaturescontinuouslydiminishes.Increasingthevoidageratioandnominal maximum particle sizesignificantlyenhances the permeableperformanceof drainedasphalt mixtures.Considering the balance betweenroad performance and drainage eficiency,therecommended target voidage for drainedasphalt mixtures is 20 % to (22 21 % .Astrong fitingrelationshipexistsbetween theexpected diameterof micro-voidsandthepermeabilitycoeficient, penetration shear strength,andlow-temperatureflexural tensilestrengthof drainedasphalt mixtures,therebyvalidating the rationalityoftherecommendedtarget voidage fromamicroscopicvoid structureperspective.theresearchresultscan provide reference for the selection of target voidage in the design of the mix ratio of drainage asphalt mixture.
