The change and cause of planting structure in Northern Jiangsu province since the 21st century

ABSTRACT： Thechanges and causes of planting structure in Northern Jiangsu province since the 2lst century were analyzed bymeans of timeseries change analysis and comparative study.Theresults indicate thatsincethe21stcentury，the sown area of crops in Northern Jiangsu has been consistently increasing，primarily driven bya continuous expansion in graincropcultivation. In contrastto Southernand Central Jiangsu，the sown area and proportion of grain crops in Northern Jiangsu have shown an upward trajectory，with significant increases observed in wheat，rice，and corn cultivation while soybean and potato cultivation have decreased notably.The shift in non-food crop cultivation patterns in Northern Jiangsu aligns with those seenin Central Jiangsu but difers from Southern Jiangsu;melon，fruit，and vegetable crops have experienced one increase andtwo decreases whilerape and cotton cultivationhas significantlydeclined.As aresult， the planting structure of Northern Jiangsu has evolved into acomposition comprising grains as wellas food crops alongside economic crops such asvegetables and fruits-transforming it into anew vegetable and grain production matrix in Jiangsu. Policy regulations have played a pivotal role by ensuring secure crop planting space，improving farmland infrastructure conditions，supporting scientific progressthrough technological advancements，along with implementing incentivemeasures to enhance competitivenessacrossfood production including vegetables and fruits.However considering the mperative need to embrace sustainable agricultural practices for increased food production while also increase farmers' income levels-the planting structure in Northern Jiangsu will experience pressure for further Policy adjustment.
