Abstract:Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)is a globally important edible legume that plays a crucial rolein food security and sustainableagricultural development.However,the sensitivity ofcommon bean to saline-alkali stresslimits the efectiveutilizationofsaline-alkalisoils and restricted improvement in overall yield. Thus,the identification of alkali-tolerant germplasm resources is crucial for enhancing the sustainability of common bean cultivation. In this study,12 common bean germplasms were firstly subjected to six concentration gradients of mixed alkali solution )for seven days,followed by the measurement of eight growth indicators. The results demonstrated that a concentration of 100mmol/L mixed alkali solution was optimal for assessing alkali tolerance at emergence stage.Furthermore,we expanded our evaluation to 187 common bean germplasms.Utilizing a 100mmol/L mixed alkali solution,we meticulously measured 11 growth indicatorsandsubsequentlyanalyzed their alkali tolerance coeffcients.Thealkali tolerance coefficients exhibited substantial variation and followed a normal distribution,with significant correlations observed between the alkali tolerance coeficient of seedling emergence rate and alkali tolerance coefficient of shoot fresh weight,alkali tolerance coefficient of root fresh weight,alkali tolerance coefficient of root dry weight,and alkali tolerance coefficient of root length.Using principal component analysis,membership function analysis,and cluster analysis,we classified the germplasms into five categories:highly alkali-tolerant type (14 accessons),alkalitolerant type(38 accessions),intermediate type(83 accessions),alkali-sensitive type(40 accessions),and extremely alkali-sensitive type(12 accessions).Finally,we developed a prediction regression equation for alkali tolerance based on stepwise regression analysis,identifying the alkali tolerance coefficients ofroot fresh weight, plant dry weight,plant length,rootdry weight and plant fresh weight as the more important indicator. This study provides a robust reference method for evaluating alkali tolerance in common bean and other crops and offers valuable resources for alkali-tolerant breeding and gene mining.
