The Quest in the Age of Exploration： Interpreting the Isle ofImmortality in El Criticón

Abstract ： The Spanish Baroque writer Baltasar Gracian constructs a paradise-like Isle of Immortality as the destination of life in his novel El Criticon.Inthe author’s view，the three dimensionsof immortalitythat humans pursue throughout their lives encompass： life，fame，and their works.The Isle of Immortality，writen by this Jesuit author，stands as a unique product of the Age of Exploration and a Baroque literary expression of seventeenth-century Spain’s religious-secular tensions： a disillusionment with this world that sought to construct a better afterlife，yet ultimately remained a mere fantasy.
