The Quest in the Age of Exploration: Interpreting the Isle ofImmortality in El Criticón

Abstract : The Spanish Baroque writer Baltasar Gracian constructs a paradise-like Isle of Immortality as the destination of life in his novel El Criticon.Inthe author’s view,the three dimensionsof immortalitythat humans pursue throughout their lives encompass: life,fame,and their works.The Isle of Immortality,writen by this Jesuit author,stands as a unique product of the Age of Exploration and a Baroque literary expression of seventeenth-century Spain’s religious-secular tensions: a disillusionment with this world that sought to construct a better afterlife,yet ultimately remained a mere fantasy.
