Literary Criticism from the Perspective of Philology -TakingErich Auerbach'sMimesisasan Example

Abstract: Philology is the comprehensive study of various languages and their classical texts. Originating in ancient Greece,it gradually developed intoa rigorousand meticulous quasi-scientific method in modern times, servingas thefoundation for allhumanities research.Romance philology focuses on the Romance language familyof Europe and its classical literature.Erich Auerbach was a preeminent scholar in Romance philology,and his work Mimesis : The Representation of Reality in Western Literature is a significant literary criticism masterpiece.Centered on the theme of“the representation of reality”in literature,the book examines the classic works of European writersfrom Homerto Virginia Woolf.Thephilological criticism methods employed in it include:thestudyof theunique usage and etymology of the conjunction“Alor” in Dante’s Divine Comedy;the analysis of the parataxis structure in The Song of Roland;and the exploration of The Song of Rolandasa medieval epic.Its use of multilingualism,rigorous methodology,and comparative perspectivealloffer crucial insights forcontemporary literary criticism and research.Therefore,scholars in the humanities should return to philology:master multilingual skils,receive more philological training,become familiar with at least two literaryand cultural traditions,andadopt acomparative perspective.This may help them seek new breakthroughs in an era where humanities research is declining and AI is on the rise.
