Ethical Responsibility and Educational Mission of Modern Universities -The Chinese Mirrorof Derek Bok's Moral Education Thought

Abstract:In the process of modern universities moving fromivory towers to the center of society,their functions andresponsibilities have undergone profound changes.During his tenure as president of Harvard University, Derek Boke centered on improving teachingqualityand strengthening social contributions.Through systematicreforms,heconstructed amoral education ideological system rooted in the diverse educational traditions of the United States,emphasizing the cultivation of individual virtues and civic responsibilities to respond to social needs.Chinese higher education is currentlyat a critical stage of deepening the implementation of the fundamental task of “cultivating students with virtue.”Bok’s ideas provide cross-cultural inspiration for balancing academic autonomyand social responsibility,optimizing the practice of ideological and political education incourses,and improving the“holistic education”mechanism.This paper analyzes the theoretical core of Bok’s moral education ideology fromthe triple dimensions of historical logic,practical path,and contemporary value,and combines cuting -edge theoriessuch as communicative rationalityand spatial ethics to explore its reference significance forthe high-qualitydevelopment ofChinese education.
