The Isomorphic Relationship between Clothing Reform and Poetic Liberation Around the May Fourth Movement
WANG Yunxia,JIANG Yushan ( School of Humanities,Shanghai Jiao Tong University,Shanghai2Oo24O,China)
Abstract:In the historical context around the May Fourth Movement, the clothing reforms advocated by modern intellctuals and the revolution in poetic form advanced in parallel, mutually influencing each other.Vernacular poets were not only liberators of poetic form but also advocates and promoters of Western-style clothing system. Moreover, using new poetry, they imbued Western suits with rich metaphors possessing three dimensions:things-words-man. On one hand, clothing reform and poetic liberation embodied poets‘rebellion against traditional“linguistic order”and“bodily order”. On the other hand, poets found themselves being caught in the awkward predicament of dual cultural tensions of tradition versus modernity and the locality versus the Occident. By the late l92Os to the 1930s ,with the rise of the “Down with Western Suits”movement and the anti-“Europeanization” trend in the field of poetry, poets came to recognize the necessity of defending national cultural identity and reconstructing the subjective self. This dual-track historical narrative of isomorphic relationship between the May Fourth clothing reform and poetic liberation demonstrates that the subjectivity pursued by modern intellectuals has always existed in a rheological state of constant creation and reconstruction.
