Abstract:Liu Huan's Newly Discovered Han Dynasty Wooden Slips: Collation and Interpretation of the Cangjie Pian and Shi Pian has disclosed three newly discovered Han Dynasty excavated wooden slips—Cangjie Pian,Shi Pian I,and Shi Pian II. The nature of Shi Pian II difers from that of a dictionary. It should be named Xingzhang Pian ,folowing the common naming convention for Qin and Han Dynasty introductory texts, taking its first two characters. The Xingzhang Pian possesses a unique structure. The first half of its 52 chapters is organized according to the five mourning atire categories: Zhan Cui(斩衰),Zi Cui(齐衰),Da Gong(大功),Xiao Gong(小功),and Si Ma(總麻).Its primary ceremonial content is drawn from clasic Han Dynasty ritual texts. The Xingzhang Pian is a document devoted entirely to ritual and government, similar in nature to Dizi zhi ,and falls within the categorization of the “Six Arts”in the Yiwen Zhi section of the Book of Han. The Xingzhang Pian is currently one of the most important ritual texts unearthed from the Han Dynasty, alongside the Mawangdui Mourning Clothes Diagram and the Wuwei Han bamboo slips Yi Li .
