Abstract:Intercropping hasalong history inChina.Alarge numberof studies haveshown that intercroppingof maizeand leguminouscropsnotonlyhascertainadvantagesinincreasing thecropyieldatthepopulationlevelbutalsoenablesthe abovegroundpartsofplantstoeiientlytlilightandtemperatureresoucesandtendergoundpartstooptiietheutiltion of waterandnutrentresoues,therebyachievingthesynergisticenhancementofresouresndimprovingtheproductivityofdryland farmingsystems.Thispapermainlyreviewsthemainmechanismsbywhichintercropingofmaizewithleguminouscropsimproves theproductivityofdylandfamlandthroughenhancingtheutlizationoflight,water,ndnutrients.Italsoanalyzstheain approaches bywhich intercroppingof maizewith leguminouscropscanincrease theproductivityofdrylandfarmlandthrough optimizingagronomicontrolmeasurssuchasoarietis,utrientmanagement,spaiallyout,andplantingdensityre,it presentsthekeyissues thatneedtobeadresedintheapplicationofmaizeandleguminouscropintercropping.Itaimstoprovide strongtheoreticalandtchicalsupportforteratioalconstructionofigheld,stable-ieldandesoueefcientiteog patterns of cereal and legume suitable for dryland farmlands in China.
