Abstract：Intercropping hasalong history inChina.Alarge numberof studies haveshown that intercroppingof maizeand leguminouscropsnotonlyhascertainadvantagesinincreasing thecropyieldatthepopulationlevelbutalsoenablesthe abovegroundpartsofplantstoeiientlytlilightandtemperatureresoucesandtendergoundpartstooptiietheutiltion of waterandnutrentresoues，therebyachievingthesynergisticenhancementofresouresndimprovingtheproductivityofdryland farmingsystems.Thispapermainlyreviewsthemainmechanismsbywhichintercropingofmaizewithleguminouscropsimproves theproductivityofdylandfamlandthroughenhancingtheutlizationoflight，water，ndnutrients.Italsoanalyzstheain approaches bywhich intercroppingof maizewith leguminouscropscanincrease theproductivityofdrylandfarmlandthrough optimizingagronomicontrolmeasurssuchasoarietis，utrientmanagement，spaiallyout，andplantingdensityre，it presentsthekeyissues thatneedtobeadresedintheapplicationofmaizeandleguminouscropintercropping.Itaimstoprovide strongtheoreticalandtchicalsupportforteratioalconstructionofigheld，stable-ieldandesoueefcientiteog patterns of cereal and legume suitable for dryland farmlands in China.
