Zhang Shiying's Educational Thought and Its Contemporary Value

Abstract:Zhang Shiying wasa pioneer inthe modernizationof educationin Northwest China during thelateQing Dynasty andearlyRepublicof China. Upholding the philosophyof“saving the nation through education”,he established numerous new-style schols and innovated teaching content and methods,significantlyadvancing the transitionof local education fromtradition to modernity.This paper provides anin-depth and systematicanalysis of themain components of his educational thought,itssocietalimpact,anditscontemporaryvalue.Intermsof itscoreprinciples,Zhang proposed theconceptof“aving the nation through education”,advocated for“educationbyalland for all”,emphasized“learning to love thecountryand knowledgeto strengthenit”,and promoted a holistic educational approach that balanced“moral,intelectual,and physical development".In practice,hebuiltamulti-leveleducational network in Shaanxi,Gansu,andotherre gions,creating a model of government-encouraged and community-run or jointlyoperated schools.Regarding contemporaryrelevance,his ideas offer significantinsights for modernquality-oriented education,patriotic education,comprehensive talent cultivation,curiculum design,and teaching reforms.Zhang Shiying's educational endeavors reshaped the cultural ecology of Northwest China and provide valuable historical lessons for contemporary educational reform.
