【Abstract】Objective To investigate the influence of passive social networking site （SNS）use on depression among middleschool students，as wellas the multiplesequential mediating roles of body imagecomparison，body dissatisfaction，andrestrictiveeatingbehaviorinthisrelationship.MethodsAtotalof12O1middlescholstudents were surveyedusingthe PassiveFacebook Use Scale，theBody Image Comparison Scale，the Global Subscale of the Negative Physical Self Scale，the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire，and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale.Results ① Passive SNS use was positively correlated with depression among middle school students （r=0.48，P<0.01）. ② Body image comparison，body dissatisfaction，and restrictive eating behavior play multiplesequential mediating roles between passive social networking site use and depression in middle school students.Specifically，passive social networking site use exerts significant indirect effcts ondepression through the following sequential pathways：restrictive eating behavior alone;body image comparison followedbyrestrictive eating behavior;body dissatisfaction folowed by restrictiveeating behavior;and body image comparison，then bodydissatisfaction，and finall restrictive eating behavior.ConclusionPasive SNS use can directly influence depressionandalso indirectlyaffect itthrough thesequential mediatingroles ofbodyimage comparison，body dissatisfaction，and restrictive eating behavior.
