Practice and Implications of Ancient Book Digitization Projects at the Austrian National Library： A Case Study of the “Austrian Books Online" Project

Abstract The Austrian National Library has been engaged in digitizing manuscriptsand collections of ancient books since the 1990s.Among its initiatives，the“Austrian Books Online”project is one of the most influential digitization projects.Using this project asacase study，the paper examines itsconcrete practices intheconstructionandutilizationof digitalancientbooks，highlighting three notableexperiences：establishingand developingcrowdsourcing platforms， creatingacademic project aliances，andcultivating young talent.Based on these insights，the paper explores future directions for the digitizationof ancient books in Chinesepublic libraries，focusing on four areas：advancing digital technologyapplications，creating innovativeexhibition formats，promoting diversified crosssectorcollaboration，and broadening participation to further enhance the preservation and regeneration of ancient books.
