AbstractIntheearlyPeriodoftheRepublicofChina，theinitialsocialimageofmodern Chineselibraries beganto take shape.Basedonreportsrelatedto libraries published inShenBao （knownhistoricalyinthewestas ShunPao）between 1912 and1925，this paper examines howthe term“library”graduallyreplaced“book collection hall”（cangshulou） n the public consciousnessfrom the late Qing Dynasty to theearlyRepublican period.It further explores the positioning of libraries’social image in theearly RepublicofChina from threedimensions：asakeyinstitutionofsocial education，as a symbol of the level of civilization，and as an educational foundation for industrial revitalization.
