[Abstract]Dentalcaries isa chronic infectious disease occurring inthehard tissueofteethunderthe influenceof bacteria.Streptococus mutans(S.mutans)isconsideredthemajor etiologicalagentofdentalcaries in humans.Mutanobactin is oneof thesecondary metabolitesofS.mutans.Itisoneof non-ribosomal peptide/polyketide hybrid products and is mainlysynthesizedbythemubgenelocated intheTnSmu2 gene island.Additionally,themajor typesofthis productare MutanobactinA,B,C,andD,whichcanbesynthesized invitro.TheMutanobactinofS.mutansplaysanimportantrole inphysiological functions ranging from oxidative stressresistanceand interspeciescompetitionto immunoregulation. Moreover,itsproductionisectedbyariousregulatorymechanismsinvivo,theexteralenvironment,ndcommesal bacteria.Thiswork mainlyreviews thesynthesis,physiologicalrole,andrelatedregulatorymechanismsofMutanobactin to provide anew horizon for elucidating the caries virulenceofS.mutans and new methods fororal microecologicalregulation and management of caries.
