Triple Spaces and Spatial Metaphor : AStudy of Spatial Narrative in the Chinese Road Movie As Night Falls

Abstract:DirectorJian Haodong'sfilmNightFalscentersonthespiritual themesof "beinglost"and "seeking".It offersanaesthetic interpretationof the"quest"motif throughatripartitenarrative structure encompassing regional space,social space,and spiritual space.By juxtaposing the manifest and hidden spaceswithin theregional landscape,thefilmreveals theroadspaceasametaphorical possbilityfor"seeking".Furthermore,through constructing dual socialatmospheres of "alienation"and"warmth"within the road space,it exposes the protagonist's lossof identityand struggleforrecognitionwithin thesocial space.Consequently,theinterplayof regionaland social spaces drivestheconstructionof theprotagonist'sspiritual space,manifesting as thesubject's renewedsearch for "Dasein"(Being-in-the-world)amidst the predicament of lost identity.This deepens the spatial narrativeexpression of the"seeking"theme in Chinese road movies,achieving an effective fusionof narrativity and aesthetic quality.
