A Textual Research on Postscript to the Usnisa-vijaya Dharani Sutra Written by Zhang Chengfu

Abstract：ThetextPostscript tothe Usnisa-vijaya DharaniSutra，which was writenbyZhangChengfuinthesecondyearof theRuyiera（693CE）oftheTang dynastybasedonhisownpersonal experiences，istheearliest known storycoecting supernaturalormagicalpowertothe Usnisa-vijayaDharaniSutra.Althoughtheoriginaldocumenthaslongbeenlost，thefll texthassincebeenrecoveredfromtwoBuddhisttone pillrswithinscriptions fromtheKaiyuanperiod.ItisknownthatZhang Chengfu was thesonofZhang Bi，afavoredcourtierduring thereignofEmpressWu Zetianwhoservedasaroyalinspector in the Zimeng Army before he was framed formisconductand exiledtoTingzhoubefore finallreturning totheCentral Plain in thesecondyearoftheRuyiera.ZhangChengfu’sexperiencesthusrevealafascinatingaspectoftheruthlesspoliticalatmosphere that existed between officials during the reign ofWu Zetian.
