On the Dissemination of the Master Copies of the Dunhuang Murals

Abstract:While most artisticcreation todayis produced byartists with total freedom towork as theywish,the murals and statues nancientreligious temples were usuallycreatedaccording tomastercopies.Themastercopies that te Dunhuang murals werebasedoncame mostlyfromthe CentralPlains,thoughthecontentsandappearanceofthesame themesvariedindiferent cavesanddiferenttimes.Byinvestigating thecirculationofthemastercopies forthepaintingsofDunhuang,ithasbeen discoverd thatsomeof thetemplates are inconsistent with thecontentsofthe Buddhist scriptures they were meant to expres, andthat someof these inconsistenciescontinuedtoberepeatedoveralong periodoftime.Thissuggsts thatthe mastercopies continued to be used for a long time after they were first introduced to Dunhuang.

敦煌在古代属于中央王朝统治下的一个州县,刺史与县令均由中央政府委派,所以敦煌艺术是中原艺术的一部分,敦煌壁画中的粉本多数来自中原,这是学术界一致的观点。(剩余6164字)
