Effects of Different Flower Thinning Agents on Apple Flower Thinning

Abstract: Thinning flowers and fruits,as one of theessential management practices in orchard production,plays a crucial role in regulating the fruit load of apple trees,alleviating the phenomenon of alternate bearing, increasing theproportionof high-quality fruits,andachieving thegoalsof intensive,eficient,and stable production.Currently,in theLongdong region of the Loess plateau,flowerand fruit thinning is predominantly conducted manually,which is labor-intensiveand time-consuming.Chemical flower thinning ofers aneffective alternative that can overcomethe limitations of traditional manual methodsand significantly reduce labor costs. This study was conducted in the major‘Fuji’apple-producing areas of eastern Gansu province on the Loess plateau,aiming toevaluate the effcts of differentconcentrations of chemical thinning agents onflower thinning effcacy such as lime sulfur (LS),ethephon(ETH),and ammonium thiosulfate (ATS).The results indicated that treatmentswith 1% LS and 1.2% ATS achieved inflorescence fruit set rates of 52.06% and 51.82% , respectively,and flower fruit set rates of 19.67% and 18.51% ,respectively. These outcomes were superior to those of other treatments.These two agents are highly effective options for chemical flower thinning,the Longdong region of the Loess plateau.
