Influence of SUV rear hatch panel gaps on aerodynamic performance

Abstract: In order to study the influence of rear hatch gaps and cavities on the flow field structure and overall aerodynamic drag of an SUV,a combined approach of numerical simulation and clay model wind tunnel esting is employed,the aerodynamic performance variations caused by sealing gaps at different locations are analyzed,and their underlying mechanisms are examined.The results show thatthe internal drag contribution of the rear hatch cavity to the overall aerodynamic drag is minimal,approximately 0.3% . When the gaps near the side spoiler are sealed,the airflow separation induced by cavity jet flow is mitigates,and the vehicle’s drag coefficient is reduced by O.OO2. The research results can provide ideas for the refined development of vehicle aerodynamic performance.
