Impactofchildhood abuse on depression in collge students：a chain mediated effect of machiavellianism and a sense of meaning inlife

【Abstract】 Objective To explore the impact of childhood abuse on depressive symptoms in college students andits underlying mechanisms.Methods A total of 69O university students were surveyed online using the Chinese version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form （CTQ-SF），the Dark Triad scale （DD），the Meaning in Life Questionnaire （MLQ），and the Chinese versionof the Beck Depression Inventory，SecondEdition （BDI-II-C）.Results （2号 ① Childhood abuse was positively correlated with Machiavellianism（r=0.29， P- <0.01） and depression（r=0.40，P<0.01）， and negatively correlated with the sense of meaning in life（ r=⋅ -0.21， P <0.01）. ② Childhood abuse significantly predictedMachiavellianism（ β=0.31 ， P<0.001 ），depression （ β =0.51， P<0.001 ），and sense of meaning in life （ β= -0.27， P <0.001）.Machiavellianism significantlypredicted both sense of meaningin life （ β=-0.26 ， P<0.001 ）and depressive symptoms in college students （ β=0.30 P<0.001 ）. The sense of meaning in life significantly negatively predicted depressive symptoms in college students （ β= -0.26， P <0.001）. ③ Machiavellianism and sense of meaning inlife acted as serial mediators between childhood abuse and depression in college students， with a 95% CI of （0.009， 0.038），not containing O，accounting for 3.02% of the total effect. Conclusion Childhood abuse not only directly affcts depressive symptoms incollege students butalso indirectly influences them through the serial mediationof Machiavellianism and the sense of meaning in life.
