Analysis of HUANG Yan's Clinical Experience in Treating Insomnia Based on Theory of "Sea of Blood in Brain"

Abstract：Professor HUANGYan's theory on the "sea of blood inbrain" posits three characteristics：First，it is all-encompassing，gathering a vastamount of nourishing substancesand establishing extensive connections with the body'sfunctional structures.Second，itis prone to fluctuations，withthe storedsubstances constantly changing.Third， the total amountof refined bloodandothersubstances inthe seaof blood mustbemaintained within appropriate levels， as excess ordeficiency can lead to disease.Profesor HUANG believes that the occurrence of insomniais invariably related tothe insuficiencyof refinedsubstanes in thebrain'sseaof blood，disruptedcommunicationandtransportation， andimbalances in excessanddeficiency.She identifies thecore pathogenesis of insomnia as qiand blood deficiency， exuberance ofyang with decline ofyin，yin-yang disharmony，andrestlessof brainand spirit.Her treatment emphasizes the principles of tonifying deficiencyand reducing excess，and harmonizing yin and yang，with afocuson regulatingtheheart，liver，and spleen，whilealsopaying attentionto thelung and kidney.This hasledtoadistinctive approach to treating insomnia characterized by clearing heart heat and calming the mind，strengthening the spleen and nourishing the blood，and soothingandcalming the liver.Additionally，sheemphasizes the selection of tranquilling medicinal basedontheactual condition topromotesynergistic efectsof medicines，aiming toachieve the stateof "stable yin and compact yang will ensure harmoney of essence and spirit".
