Preparation and properties of silica aerogel insulation material reinforced by aramid fiber felt

Abstract In order to improve the mechanical properties of silica aerogel, silica aerogel composites were prepared by sol-gel atmospheric drying technique using aramid fiber felt as the substrate.They were characterized by infrared spectrum and X-ray diffraction,and their mechanical properties,thermal stability and flame retardancy were tested.The results showed that the prepared silica aerogels have excellent comprehensive properties,the particle size is 147.9μm , the mass loss rate is 49.81% ,and the compressive strength is 2.03MPa ,which effectively improve the tensile strength of the aerogel composites. No further burning,melting and dripping occur during the flame retardancy test.The light weight and good thermal and mechanical properties of silica aerogel reinforced by aramid fiber mat make it have a wide application prospect in the field of thermal insulation.
