The Influence of Extrusion Process on the Microstructure and Properties of High-strength and Tough Automotive Aluminum Alloy

Abstract:To investigate the effects of the extrusion process on the microstructureand properties of highstrength,high-toughnessAl-Mg-Siseriesautomotivealuminum allys,asystematicanalysis isconductedonprofiles under diferent processing conditions using methods such asoptical microscopy,transmission electron microscopy, tensiletesting,bending tests,andcrushing tests.Theresultsshow thatincreasing the billettemperatureorextrusion speed raises the quenching entry temperatureof the profileand significantly increases the thickness of thecoarse grain layer.The strength of the aloy improves with therisein quenching entry temperature,butthe bendingand crushing performance decline as the coarse grain layer thickens.Ultimately,itis determined that under process conditions with a billet temperature of 460~480C and an extrusion speed of 4.0~4.5m/min ,orabillet temperature of 480~500 2 and an extrusion speed of 3.0~3.5 m/min,profiles with excellentcomprehensive performance can be obtained,meting automotive requirements for strength,bending,and crushing performance.
