Development and Testing of a Digital Forest Compass Meter

Abstract：Given that the curent forest resource investigation and monitoring equipment in our countrycan no longer adaptto thedevelopentneedsofforestrymodernization，thisarticle has developedanovel typeof digital forestcompass.On the hardware，this instrument incorporates a single-point laser ranging radar，atitude sensors，and ndustrial cameras，and also develops a matching C# upper computer software to achieve the measurement，calculation， reading，and storage of parameterssuch asthe position of the tree and the heightof the tree.Moreover，the software featuresreal-time images presented bythe industrial camera and virtual crosshairs to replacethe aiming scope of the traditionalcompass fortarget alignment.To verify theaccuracyand eficiency of the instrument，48 standing trees were selected for the experiment.The test results indicate thatin terms of accuracy，the MAE of the distance is O.12 meters，the RMSE is O.16 meters，the MAE of the azimuth angle is 3.98 degrees，and the RMSE is 5.O3 degrees， the MAEof the tree height is O.49 meters，and theRMSE is O.58 meters.The MAEof the position of the tree on the X- axis and the Y-axis are O.32 meters and O.3O meters respectively，and the RMSE are 0.44 meters and 0.37 metersrespectively；interms ofoperating effciency，the instrument inthisarticle is approximately2times thatof the digital compass.The results demonstrate that the digital forest compass is easy to operate，possesses high measurement accuracy，fast operating speed，isconvenient to carryand operate，and can replace the traditional forest compass，with the aim of providing a new means for the forest resource investigation method.
