Abstract: For Wei Yuan, the Yi Jing(The Book of Changes) and the Yi Zhuan (Commentaries on theYi Jing) fundamentally concern moral cultivation and statecraft. His interpretation of Yiology centers precisely on these dual themes. He posited that the distinction between the sage and others lies in the “ability to examine one’s faults and promptly corrct them rigorously”. Thus, saint theory is the study of reforming conduct and correcting errors. Wei Yuan viewed moral cultivation and statecraft not as separate but as an essence-function relationship, asserting that statecraft must be rooted in moral virtue. Moreover,he emphasized that kingly statecraft necesitates tangible outcomes such as national prosperity and strength, rejecting empty discourse on morality and mind-nature.Initially inclined towards Song Neo-Confucianism,Wei Yuan later championed New Text Confucianism. His thought on Yiology, synthesizing Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism and late Qing New Text Classical scholarship through moral cultivation and statecraft, represents the core of his intellectual legacy.
