From Prosperity to Decline： a Historical Examination of the Nanjing Library Association During the Republic of China Period

AbstractThe Nanjing Library Association was established in 1924 and was one of the earliest local library associations during the Republic of China period. Over its ten-yeardevelopment，the association experienced stages of rise and decline，witnessing significant developments in modern Chinese library services.This paper systematically examines the backgroundof itsestablishment，developmentalprocess，majoractivities，and historical contributions， revealing itspositiveroleinpromoting libraryservices inNanjing，fostering libraryprofessionals，andstrengthening the connectionbetween thegovernmentandthe industry.Italsoanalyzes thereasons fortheassociation’slater stagnation， includingpoliticalistabilitynancialconstraints，ndliitationsinitsinteraloperationalmchanisms.Thetoical experienceof the Nanjing Library Association not only provided a reference for the development of other local library associationsatthetimebutalsooffersimportanthistorical insightsforthedevelopmentof modernlibraryservices.
