Abstract:Theprocessoffood preparationisofteneasilyaestheticized,overshadowingits inherent natureas“labor”. Whilethe fluent demonstrationofcookingskills showcases theaestheticsof movement,itsimultaneouslyobscures the physicalexertionandmentalfatigueexperiencedbythelaborers.InGeLiang'sYanShiJi,fodanditsassociatedlabor arecharacterizedbydistinctrepetitiveness.Within therepetitive textual structureand temporal framework,thefood producers inthenoveldevelopaformofrationalized“self-deprivation”throughthe interplayofrepetitivelaborand its intermittentvariations.Building uponthis,therepetitive laborsurrounding food intensifies the“deprivation”hierarchical relationship betweenthelower and upperclasses,and extends togenderand family dynamicsthrough theconnection betweenidentityandfood.Correspondingtoculinarylabor,theimitationofculinarytastesandtheidentityconstruction achievedthrough suchimitationreflect thehierarchical nature inherentinfoodconsumption.Furthermore,asacultural carrierfundamentalllinkedtoidentity,foodconsumptioncan,inspecifichistoricalperiods,catalyzeforcesofcultural and political identification.
