The countryside as a site of memory:spatial writing in directorLi Ruijun's films

Abstract:With the acceleration of China's modernization process,the relentless expansion of urban space in therealworldhas leftrural spaceinaprecariouscondition.Thefilmseriesbythenew-generation directorLiRuijun colectivelyconstructsaportraitofruraltransformationwithinmodernity’scontextLi'scinematicimager,exploations of traditional rural memory areconducted across three dimensions:physical space,imaginative space,and athird cinematicspace.Physicalspaceforegrounds theroleofintergenerationalsites (houses,land,graves)inthepreservationof individual memories.Imaginative space reveals anxieties ofrootlessessandthe quest foraspiritual homeland,exposing thepredicamentofafadingruralcivilization.Cinematicimagery,functioningasthethirdspace,achievesthepreservation of traditionalrural life'sspatiotemporaltraces through telephoto,panoramicand long shot.DirectorLiRuijun's work notonlyusesimages tocounteracttheerosionofruralmemories,butalsoactivatesregionalidentitythroughindividual memories and reinforces ethnic identity through collctive memories,offering avisualarchive for the survivalofrural civilization amid the tides of modernization.
