Effect of thermal aging on interface characteristics of silicone rubber in electrical connector

Abstract:Sufficient interfacial pressure and good insulation performance between silicone rubber and epoxy resin at electrical connector insertion are the keys to ensure its stable operation,but the aging characteristics of silicone rubber will affect the interfacial pressureand insulation performance between it and epoxy resin. In order to study the effct of thermal aging on interface characteristics of silicone rubber in electrical connector,the single cone structure model of silicone rubber and epoxy resin was established, and the distribution of interface pressre and electric field was calculated by finite element simulation. The effect of thermal aging on the distribution of interfacial pressure and electric field was analyzed based on the experimental results of silicone rubber’s cross-linking density,infrared spectrum and tensile property. The results show that under the action of thermal aging,the cross-linking reaction and hydrogen removal reaction of silicone rubber occur,and the cros-linking density increases,resulting in the increase of silicone rubber’s elastic modulus, which makes the interfacial pressure larger than 0.25MPa ,and it will cause damage to silicone rubber's structure and partial discharge,resulting in the insulation failure of the electrical connector.
