Integration and Application of Urban Design Methods in Historic Preservation

Abstract

Urbandevelopment has entered theeraof stock-based urban regeneration in China，and historic preservation has consequently entered anew stageofdevelopment.Facing new challnges including the increasing diversityof cultural heritageproperties，growingdemandsforinterdisciplinaryintegration，and higherrequirements fortheintegrityand precision of preservationpractices，preservation planning must fully integrate historic preservation with urban design. Anchored inavalues-oriented perspective，thisarticle proposes how toapplyurban design methods in preservation planningatdiferentspatialscales，specificallyintermsofidentifyingdesignstrategiesandleveragingthetransmission roleof design guidelines.Through case studies such as thePreservation Planning of the Historic CityofLangzhong， thePreservationandRegeneration Planingofthe Shanan HistoricalandCulturalDistrictin Zhoukouandthedesign of the Zhoukou Federation of Trade Unions Building，this article explores the application of urban design methods in historic preservation at different scales and levels.
