Grain yield increase potential and carbon emisson reduction strategies for abandoned cropland recultivation in southwest China

Abstract:Theabandonmentofcroplandleads toresourcewaste,recultivationofabandonedcroplandstandsasanefectivemeasureto enhancegrain productioncapacity.Fousing onsouthwest China,thisstudyemployedremote sensinganalysisandscenariomodeling to evaluatebothgainyieldpotentialandcarbonemissosfromabandonedroplandrecultivationTheesultsshowedthatthetotalareaof abandoned land in southwest China was approximately 8.03×1 0∘hm2 ,mainly distributed in the Yunnan-Guizhou region and southern Gansu. Among hese,trassabetigiczesgpotatatdtera3740, 0s , (20 4.909×10∘ ,and 2.566×103hm2 ,respectively.Recultivation could achieve significant production capacity and demonstrated significant productionpotetial.eobedyeldpotetialfrsringadutupotatsacd8910tacoutigfappoxiately%f China's total potato production.Production capacities for rice,maize,and wheat were projected at 2.47×10∘ 2.24×10∘ ,and 6.73×109 L respectively. Carbon emission analysis revealed that rice cultivation generated the highest emisions(1.77×10' kg CO 12 eq). Implementing mitigation measures could reduce emissions by approximately 8.66 ×108 kgCC 12 -eq.Recultivation crop species should be selected based on localconditions,andkycarbon-reductiontchologiesincludingaleratewetig-dyingforiceandlowreleasefertlirsshouldbe simultaneouslypromoedEstablsngsupportiveolicysystesyalseecssrytosyegisticallychievegainproductioniase and carbon reduction targets.
