The Observations and Responses of the Taiwan Authorities to the Bandung Conference

Xu Hao

Abstract:The Taiwan authorities were extremely concerned about theconvening of the Bandung Conference in 1955.This was not only due to the precarious“international status”of the Taiwan authorities in the early 1950s but also because the Taiwanauthorities had always regarded the Third World as a stage for competition with the mainland. After the failure of the“diplomatic”negotiations before the conference, the Taiwan authorities did not hesitate to create the“Princess Kashmir”incident in an attempt to completely prevent People’s Republic of China from participating in the Bandung Conference. After the successul conclusion of the Bandung Conference, the Taiwan authorities actively organized the second “Asian Peoples’Anti-Communist League” conference, attempting to court international forcescenteredaround itself. These measures not onlyfailed to playtherole as the Taiwan authorities had wished but also exposed Taiwan’s limited capabilities and the limitations ofits foreign policy, thereby further diminishingTaiwan’s“international status”.
