The CPC’s United Front Work in the Political Department of the Military Commission of the National Government （1938-1940）

Abstract：In the early phase of the whole nation’s Warof Resistance against Japanese Aggression，the Political Department of the National Government’s Military Commission served as a crucial platform for KMT-CPC cooperation.CPC members such as Zhou Enlai and Guo Moruo joined the Political Department and held key positions. Throughout their involvement in the Department’soperations，the CPC gained a deep understanding of relations among party cliques and efectively launched united front work.By reinforcing its ties with Chen Cheng and the Third Party whileexploitingtheir tensions with the Fuxingshe（Revival Society），the CPC maximized its access to political resources and expanded its operational scope.Simultaneously，leveraging the authority and institutional standing of the Political Department，the CPC exerted a sustainedand subtle influence over the Kuomintang’s propaganda apparatus and established extensive connections with various levels of Kuomintang military and political institutions as wellas diverse social sectors.These strategic eforts greatly increased the CPC's political influence and helped to strengthen and expand the united front against Japanese aggression throughout the nation.
