Revisiting the Controversy between the Eastern Expedition and the Northern Campaign in 1927
Lu Yi
Abstract:Folowing Chiang Kai-shek’s purge of the party in 1927,a period of political confrontation emerged between the Nanjing and Wuhan governments. With regard to the military strategy of the Wuhan National Government, internaland inter-party disagreements arose within both the Kuomintang(KMT)and the Communist Party of China(CPC). The decision-making processencompassed multiple stages : cancellation of two planned Eastern Expeditions before the April12 counterrvolutionary coup;Mikhail Borodin’s strategic shift from endorsing an Easter Expedition to advocating a Northern Campaign;the adoption and later revocation of the CPC Central Committee's resolution opposing an immediate northward advance;and, finally, the KMT's abrupt policy reversal on April18.Throughout this period, despite the increasingly strained relations between the two parties, most decision-makers continued to base their assessments primarilyon the prevailing strategic situation.A key concern was that the Fengtian Army might seize the oportunity to advance southward following an Eastern Expedition.Consequently, advancing northward became the only viable option. The continual changes in the situation further complicated the decision-making process, resulting in a series of policy reversals and indecisiveness.
