A Historical Examination of the “ Tuanzu” System in the Communist Youth League
Liang Zhuangzhi
Abstract:The“tuanzu”(Youth League organizations)represented an organizational framework instituted by the early Communist Youth League within non-League youth entities. This system, emerging from the interactions with Soviet Rusia, was established during the adjustments in the relationship between the CPCand the Youth League, and it matured through the rigorous test of revolutionary practice.Focusing on the“tuanzu”system, the Communist Youth League developed an operational framework of“ Youth League-tuanzu-mass organizations,” which efectively mobilized young individuals to actively participate in revolutionaryactivities.Simultaneously, however, the harsh revolutionary environment, the limitations of their inherent capabilities, and various other subjectiveand objective factors collectively constrained the effectiveness ofthe“tuanzu”system in fulfillng its role. In lightof the inherent limitations of theYouth League and thenecesityof comprehensivelyrecalibrating the relationship between the CPC and the Youth League, the CPC resolved to fundamentally restructure the Youth League.Consequently, the functions previously undertaken by the“tuanzu” were assumed by the“dangtuan” (early forms of Party organizations). The sustained competition and collaboration between the“tuanzu”and the “dangtuan” constituted a significant factor contributing to the eventual dissolution of the“tuanzu”system.
