Abstract：This paper focusesonthe meaning-generation process English idioms.Groundedinthetheoreticalframework conceptual metaphor，itconductsanin-depth explorationandaalysis thesharedcognitivemechanismsandhddencultural-specificfactorsunderlyingEnglishidioms.TroughahorzontalcomparisonasubstantialnumberChineseandEnglishidios，wit intheframeworkconeptualmetaphor，thispaperuncoversthecognitiveuniversalsadvocatedbycognitivelinguisticsinidioms： （1）the metaphorical mapping body-part idiomsisembodied;（2）thesourcedomainsselectedbyanimalidioms underconceptual metaphorsareharacterizedbyniversalityvividnssdistictnsetc.3ereeisthierarchcalrelatioshisocepal metaphorsinidiomsaboutthenaturalenvironment，etc.Furthermore，idiomsindiferentculturalcontextsaylsodemonstratedier gencesinteconceptualizationdiferentiages.Terefore，infuturediomteachng，translationandresearchohtoicallanguage，itissraknttreticalpstif"ivesalitiality"sopesilyi date the operating mechanisms behind idioms.
