Abstract:Neuroscience research,central to both the International Brain Initiativeand China’s brain science strategy,seeks tounravelthecomplexitiesof thebrainandadress neurologicaldisorders,with technological innovation atitscore.Keytoadvancing this field isthedevelopmentof non-invasive imagingtechniques withhighspatiotemporalresolutionand precise,controlable neural modulation methods.Traditional imaging modalities,such as MRIand CT,areconstrainedbylimitations in biological safety,resolution,andtisue penetration.In paralel,external field modulationtechniques-basedonmechanical,thermal,acoustic,andmagneticprinciples—arehinderedbyisufficient spatiotemporal resolution and slow response times.Recently,near-infrared light has emerged as apromising tool in brain science due to itssuperiortissue penetrationand minimal phototoxicity.Among these,lanthanide-based luminescentnanoparticles standoutaskeyagents fornear-infraredlight-driventechnologies,capableofemiting tunableultraviolet,visible,andnear-infraredlightuponnear-infraredexcitation.Thesenanoparticleshavefound widespread applications inbiomedical detection,precise diagnostics,and intraoperativenavigation.This reviewprovides acomprehensive summaryof the latest advancements in theuse of lanthanide-based luminescent nanoparticles for neuroimagingand neural modulation,identifies existing technologicalchalenges,and explores future directions from theperspectivesof materials science,chemistry,andbiomedicine.Thereviewaims to foster interdisciplinary integration,stimulate technological innovation,and inspire breakthroughs in cuting-edge brainscience,offering newapproachesand strategiesforaddressingmajorchallengesinlife sciences.
