Abstract:Inacertaincompany,thechuck jaws ofCNC lathes fractured during use.Thecausesof chuck jaw fracture were analyzed by means of macroobservation,chemical composition analysis,hardness testing,scaning electron microscopy (SEM)analysis,and metalographic examination.Theresults show that thehigh carboncontentin theCNClathechuck jaws, insuffcient tempering afterquenching leading to excessively high hardnessand inclusions (numerous inclusions)inthe materialcaused thechuck jaws tofirstcrack atthe stressconcentration area during useand thenthecracks propagated to the entire fracture.
