AbstractFemale figures in reading-themed paintings from the Mingand Qing dynasties can generally be categorized into three groups： women from marginalized backgrounds，women from scholarly families，and women ofthe aristocracy. These paintings reflectthereading trends among womenofthe time.Literary works such as GoldenThread Lyrics， Hearing That My HusbandDu Gao Has Passed the Civil Examination，The Song of the Maiden of Green Stream，and Midnight Songs—all centeredon themes oflove—as wellaspoetrycolectionslikeAnthologyofElite Women's Poetry and romantic dramas such as The Peony Pavilion，were especially popular among women inthe Qing dynasty.At the sametime，didactic texts suchas BiographiesofExemplary WomenandAdmonitionsfor Women werealso widelyread. The rich and varied depictions of women reading during this period not only highlight the scope offemale literacy and readinginterestsbutalsoreflectthedegreeof societalrecognitionofwomen’s intelectualengagement.Theseartworks offer valuable insights into the reading culture of women in the Ming and Qing dynasties.
