AbstractSincetheearly199Os，thelibrary fieldhas begunto explore issues relatedtotheenvironmentandsustainability giving rise totheconceptof"green libraries，”which hassince evolved intoa global movement.While theunderstanding and implementationof green librariesvaryacrossregionsand institutions，the IFLAGuidelines for Green Libraries， compiled bythe IFLA Sectionon Environment，SustainabilityandLibraries，offeraunified framework for practice.The Guidelinesoutline five core principles：community engagement，accessibility and inclusion，resource effciency， informationandcommunication technology，and buildingsandequipment.Theyalsoelaborateonseven keyareas：staff traininganddevelopment;operationsandmaintenance;collections；servicesandprograms；legal，ethical，andcultural considerations;library buildings and equipment;and monitoring and evaluation.The paper assesses the value of the Guidelines frombothanindustryandsocietal perspective，which providesavital textual foundationforfuture collaborationinrelated fields.
