Limits of Heritage -Reading Notes on An Introductory Guide to International Cultural Heritage Literature

Abstract： This review critically examines An Introductory Guide to International Cultural Heritage Literature（hereinafter referred to as the Guide），analyzing the structure and significance of the 17 selected documents in the book.It points out that the book not only demonstrates thecomplexityand diversity of the heritage concept，but also reveals the inherent tensions of heritage studies asa discipline.The review notes that the boundaries of "heritage" are fluid in different discursive systems; though grounded in Western classics，the Guide also presents the disciplinary shift from elite art conservation to everyday practices and public participation. While afirming the Guide’ s value in providing introductory clues， translating core concepts and inspiring reinterpretation， the review points out its insuficient engagement with non-Western experiences and the contemporary Chinese context.It further argues that the significance of the Guide does not lie in offering answers，but in prompting readers to reflect on the practicesand perceptions of their own heritage through the experiences of others.
