Abstract: Urban exploration (urbex) has emerged in recent years as a youth subcultural practice, with small yet stable niche communities forming around it on social media platforms. As representative of “pre-heritage”that has not yet been inscribed as heritage, industrial ruins are its primary exploration destinations. Shaped by the unique trajectory of industrialization, China's industrial ruins exhibit distinct characteristics in terms of their formative contexts and historical periods. Domestic urbex practitioners follow a purely exploratory instinct rather than expressing politically charged psychological projections; they seek to forge psychological connections with the past and imagined futures on-site at industrial ruins, and demonstrate a strong predilection for historicity. This predilection, in turn, constructs a communication platform and a shared vocabulary for the dialogue between “urban exploration”and “industrial heritage”. Taking the urbex subculture as its entry point, this paper compares Chinese and Western practices, unpacks the aesthetic mechanisms underpinning industrial ruins in this context, explores the catalytic roles and insights urbex brings to the place-making of industrial heritage sites, and thus provokes a rethinking of the singular heritagization approach-one that is dominated by grand narratives and struggles to establish affective bonds with individuals.
