Abstract: The Badain Jaran Desert-Towers of Sand and Lakes is China's first and the world's seventh desert-dominated World Natural Heritage Site.It features the dual natural wonders of the world’s tallest stable mega-dunes and the densest interdunal lake cluster, embodying extraordinary natural phenomena and rare aesthetic values, and also serves as a prominent exemplar for studying the key stages of Earth’ s evolutionary history. By benchmarking the conservation experience of the world’s six major desert heritage sites, this paper discusses the formation mechanism, core values and conservation challenges of the Badain Jaran Desert-Towers of Sand and Lakes heritage site, and proposes a toplevel design based on the national park system. Specifically, it aims to realize precise protection through zonal management and control, enhance ecosystem resilience by virtue of ecological restoration projects, ensure management efficiency by improving the legal and financial guarantee mechanisms, and facilitate the positive interaction between conservation and development via an innovative community co-management model. This research thus provides a reference for the holistic and adaptive dynamic conservation of theBadainJaran Desert-Towersof SandandLakesheritagesite.
