Title：On the Functions of the Paratext of Palmer's Translation of Zhuangzi

Abstract： This paper takes Martin Palmer's translation of Zhuangzi as the research object to explore the functions and values of its paratextual elements in cross-cultural communication. The study finds that the paratexts of this translation construct a three-dimensional interpretive system through diverse forms such as cover design， publication information， translator introduction， preface， introduction， in-text annotations，and indexes. These paratextual elements not only facilitate the transmission of information in the main text but also play a key role in attracting target-language readers， demonstrating translation motivations，clarifying translation styles， and supplementing the source-language cultural context.Palmer's in-depth development and innovative application of paratexts break through the traditional translation framework， transforming paratexts into important media for cultural communication. This provides a referable paradigm and new ideas for the translation of Chinese classics and the international communication of excellent Chinese traditional culture. The research shows that fully excavating the interpretive potential of paratexts is an important path to achieve accurate decoding of cultural symbols and promote the effective“going globally" of Chinese culture.
