高尔斯华绥《质量》中的叙事动力
Title: Narrative Motivation in John Galsworthy's “Quality’
Abstract: In his short story “Quality,” John Galsworthy explores the tragic struggles of artisans resisting the tide of modern industrial and commercial development,as well as the moral elevation that arises from their suffering. He does so through three forms of narrative motivation: the explicit narrative drive generated by tragedy, the implicit narrative power of not keeping up with the times, and the implicit narrative power of moral sublimation. Among them, the implicit narrative driving force of not keeping up with the times includes multiple narrative undercurrents such as regional attachment, professional adherence, and ideological rigidity, revealing the existential dilemmas faced by those who abandon the spirit of adapting to the times. At the same time, Galsworthy reconfigures the tragic images of the Gessler brothers, shaped by the first two narrative forces through the implicit narrative power of moral sublimation, emphasizing their commitment to professional ethics and persistent pursuit of self-realization,thus iluminating the dignity of human nature. Structurally, Galsworthy employs a dual narrative pattrn of“one explicit action line and two implicit undercurrents,” in which the layers complement and challenge one another, enriching the thematic depth of the story from multiple dimensions.
