Title： Translator's Role Shifting in Non-native Language Writing： A Case Study of Peter Hessler's River Town

Abstract：After the investigation into the nonfiction River Town writen by Peter Hessler， this article finds that the author， in the non-native language writing，processes Chinese cultural elements through tripartite approaches—transliteration， word-for-word translation，and free translationwhile adopting a pragmatic-oriented role-shifting behavior as a translator. By leveraging the author's creative advantages， strategies such as annotation and contextual reconstruction are employed to mitigate cognitive barriers for Western readers， while adhering to the truth-seeking principle to preserve cultural heterogeneity， thereby forging a“trans-writing” narrative mode. The commercial success， positive reader feedback，and derivative cultural tourism phenomena validate the efcacy of this strategy in cross-cultural communication. The study reveals that nonnative language writing transforms the author from a“narrator” to a“cultural mediator” through translator role-shifting，constituting a sociocultural act that integrates linguistic transposition with cultural praxis. This not only offers fresh insights into non-native language writing but also illuminates China's cultural outreach， advocating a subject-oriented “creative translation” to balance readability and authenticity， thereby constructing cross-cultural narrative paradigms that integrate communicative efficacy with cultural depth.
