The Mechanisms and Effects of Digital Technology Empowerment on Economic Performance in the Manufacturing Industry

Abstract： In the context of China’s strategic push to digitally empower its manufacturing sector，this study investigates how digital technology application affects firms’ economic performance and explores the underlying mechanisms. Drawing on a theoretical framework that integrates digital technology application， business model innovation，and human capital upgrading，the paper， using panel data from Ashare listed manufacturing companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen from 2O12 to 2O23，conducts an empirical analysis.The study examines the foundational impact，mediating mechanisms，and contextual heterogeneity of digital transformation on firm performance.The results show that digital technology application significantly improves firms’economic performance，primarilyby enhancing innovation capacity and optimizing organizational structure， with an estimated performance gain of 61.2% compared to non-digitally transformed firms.Mechanism testing reveals that business model innovation and human capital upgrading play crucial intermediary roles in amplifying the performance-enhancing effects of digital transformation. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that firms in eastern regions experience stronger positive impacts， while state-owned enterprises tend to exhibit lower marginal returns from digital adoption.This research advances the theoretical understanding of how digital technology affects firm performance，and offers practical implications for optimizing digital transformation strategies across heterogeneous regional and ownership contexts.
